Job Summary and Qualifications Under general supervision initiates, assesses, and evaluates all forms of respiratory therapy including bronchodilators, chest physical therapy, oxygen therapy, and non-invasive and invasive ventilator care. Exercises technical knowledge in respiratory anatomy, physiology, and pathology as well as the design and operations of all respiratory therapy equipment. The RCP demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide appropriate care to neonates, infants, children, adolescents, adult and geriatric patients

What you will do in this role:

  • To know and understand the objectives, policies and procedures of the hospital and Respiratory Care Department.
  • Verifies and signs all new orders for respiratory care. Assures that all physiciansorders coincide with current departmental policy.
  • Responsible for the recognition, interpretation, and recording of signs andsymptoms of respiratory dysfunction and medication side effects,particularly those that require notification of a physician.
  • Responsible for the initiation and maintenance of cardiopulmonaryresuscitation and other life-support procedures. Ensures adequate airwaymanagement and assist with intubation
  • The prevention of contamination and of transfer of infection, throughappropriate aseptique techniques.
  • Responsible for knowing the mechanics of ventilation and ventilatorfunction.
  • Responsible for knowing the principles of airway maintenance, including endotracheal and tracheotomy care.
  • The effective and safe use of equipment for administering oxygen and other therapeutic gases and for providing humidification, nebulization, and medication
  • To know and understand the principles of arterial blood gas analysis, acid-baseand demonstrated competence in obtaining arterial blood gas samples.
  • To know and understand the methods that assist in the removal of secretions
  • from the bronchial tree, such as hydration, breathing and coughing exercises,
  • postural drainage, therapeutic percussion and vibration, and mechanical clearing
  • of the airway through proper suctioning technique.
  • Responsible for procedures and observation to be followed during and after extubating.
  • Responsible for the recognition of and attention to psychosocial needs of patients and their families.
What qualifications you will need:
    • Experience: Prefer 1 year experience as a therapist in an acute care facility
    • Education: Graduate of an AMA approved school of Respiratory Care
    • Special Qualifications: Must hold full or temporary license from the State of Texas as a Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner and certified by the National Board of Respiratory Care. Demonstrated current clinical competence, as outlined in the appropriate Orientation Checklist, maintains competency on a consistent basis, as evidenced by completion of the Annual Skills Checklist, able to deal with stressful situations and able to stand for long periods of time. Must be able to interact well with patients and peers. Possesses knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate for meeting the age-specific needs of the patients assigned to the Respiratory Care Department, including:
    • Hazards of immobility, i.e., impaired physical mobility
    • Impaired verbal communication or special communication needs
    • Ability to transfer and transport patients in consideration of their skin integrity and fragility
    • Activity intolerance
