Job Summary Battelle is currently seeking an Anatomic Pathology Senior Technician . This position will serve at our Columbus, OH and West Jefferson, OH locations. Battelle's Life Science Research is seeking a full-time technician to work in Pathology to perform necropsy procedures on small and large animal, to trim tissues for histopathology process and generate data for various types of studies. This position is Monday through Friday and will require overtime at nights, weekends and to be on call; schedule also includes holidays. Responsibilities TECHNICAL: The primary role is to perform necropsy examinations of small and large laboratory animals; to include gross necropsy, tissue collection, fixation, and labeling of specimens. Work with highly hazardous biological/toxic materials in Biological Safety Level 2 (BSL-2) and Biological Safety Level 3 (BSL-3) laboratories. Process tissues for the histopathology team following established SOPs and safety protocols; cross-train in histology (e.g., embedding, sectioning, staining) to assist histology workflows to provide flexible coverage. Contributing to the development and validation of equipment and necropsy activities. Understanding and performing dilutions including mathematical calculations involved. Contributing to the development and validation of equipment and decontaminating equipment and materials. EQUIPMENT/LAB: Act as lab technical point of contact. Laboratory cleaning and upkeep of equipment and space. Inventory, ordering and receipt of supplies. Waste management, operation of autoclaves, preparation of bleach and other decontamination solutions. Use proper technique to operate necessary equipment to produce high quality data. Perform routine maintenance and/or calibration of equipment as necessary. Prepare, maintain, and archive equipment logbooks. Use electronic databases for sample tracking and documenting necropsy examinations. Operate routine computer programs and perform basic data manipulation in a spreadsheet environment. Set up, validate, and operate laboratory equipment and software. . DOCUMENTATION/COMPLIANCE/SAFETY: Revise and author SOPs, co-author methods and study memos, etc. Read SOPs, methods, facility guidelines, etc. used in workplace in a timely manner and adhere to these procedures. Record data and perform quality control reviews in accordance with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP). Perform timely quality control and/or technical review of electronic and/or paper data. Create and maintain study files in accordance with standard operating procedures, protocol, quality requirements and client specifications. Prepare and submit study files and forms to Quality Control or Quality Assurance. Recognize when technical operations deviate from accepted practices and prepare deviation reports as needed. Report observations/problems clearly and concisely, recognizing and highlighting specific deviations. Adhere to all laboratory safety requirements. LEADERSHIP/TEAMWORK: Participate in continuous improvement and/or other management initiatives. May become a certified trainer, select agent custodian, and/or certified shipper. Train and guide staff on specific tasks. Serve as technical lead on portions of studies. Work independently and efficiently in a team environment ANALYSIS/FUNCTIONAL: Execute moderately complex and non-standard assignments, exercising judgment to assess issues and recommend solutions; may have limited client interaction. Apply solid technical knowledge to operate basic equipment, follow standard procedures, and troubleshooting as needed. Perform non-routine analyses to verify the accuracy, applicability, and reasonableness of project work; may assist in identifying ways to control or reduce fixed costs without impacting client expectations. Contribute to technical planning by estimating time requirements and proposing solutions; encouraged to make recommendations but operates with limited decision-making discretion. Complete standard and non-standard tasks under close supervision; keep the supervisor regularly informed of work status. Key Qualifications Associate degree in related field; 3 years of applicable experience; or an equivalent combination of education and or experience in a related field. Strong written and oral communication skills. Must be a US citizen. Ability to obtain/maintain certification in the Biological Suitability Assessment Program (BSAP). Ability to obtain/maintain DoJ Security Risk Assessment (SRA) approval. Ability to obtain/maintain CDC approval to work with BSAT material. Must be willing to work in a biosafety level 2 (BSL2) and 3 (BSL3) (biocontainment) environment and able to wear appropriate respiratory protection. Must be willing to be immunized with FDA licensed vaccines and Investigational New Drugs (IND) recommended for persons at risk to occupational exposure of biological agents. Must be willing to participate in random drug screening. Respond appropriately to various alarms and potential emergency situations. Sufficiently medically fit to do work in a lab wearing appropriate respiratory equipment and perform all assigned duties. Ability to work night, weekend, and holiday hours. Must be willing to commute between multiple locations.
