Job Description

Central State Hospital – Milledgeville, Georgia
Lead. Innovate. Transform Forensic Psychiatric Care.

Central State Hospital (CSH) is home to Georgia’s maximum-secure forensic psychiatric program, located in the modern Payton B. Cook Building. We provide evaluation, treatment, and stabilization for individuals referred by the criminal justice system, including those undergoing pre-trial psychiatric evaluation, found Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity, deemed Incompetent to Stand Trial, or admitted from jails statewide for urgent psychiatric care.

We are seeking an experienced, mission-driven Psychiatrist to serve as Clinical Director—a senior leadership role with the authority to shape clinical strategy, strengthen multidisciplinary practice, and improve outcomes for a uniquely complex and meaningful patient population.

Why This Role Is Exceptional for Psychiatrists

  • Statewide clinical impact: Influence forensic psychiatric care across Georgia’s largest forensic hospital.

  • Leadership authority: Direct policy, clinical operations, and quality initiatives.

  • Multidisciplinary collaboration: Lead teams of psychiatrists, psychologists, advanced practice providers, nurses, and clinical staff.

  • Stability + work–life balance: Competitive state benefits, predictable schedule, robust leave, and pension.

  • Public service mission: Meaningfully serve vulnerable individuals and contribute to public safety and mental-health transformation in Georgia.

Key Responsibilities

The Clinical Director provides executive-level clinical leadership and operational oversight. Responsibilities include:

Clinical & Operational Leadership

  • Set vision and direction for psychiatric services, ensuring evidence-based, patient-centered care.

  • Oversee, develop, and implement clinical policies, procedures, and standards of care.

  • Lead, mentor, and evaluate psychiatrists and other clinical managers; ensure a culture of collaboration, learning, and accountability.

  • Maintain awareness of advances in psychiatric treatment, diagnostic tools, technology, regulatory standards, and best practices.

Program Oversight & Quality Management

  • Plan, organize, and coordinate the delivery of health services across all units.

  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of clinical programs, ensuring compliance with Joint Commission and APA standards.

  • Ensure that services are appropriate, accessible, and responsive to patient and system needs.

  • Perform community and system assessments and translate data into strategic priorities.

Strategic & Administrative Leadership

  • Participate in strategic and operational planning for the hospital and forensic service line.

  • Direct administrative and human-resource activities for clinical teams.

  • Interview, hire, develop, and supervise staff; implement performance standards.

  • Participate in budget planning and resource allocation to support high-quality care.

  • Ensure continuous active treatment and alignment with organizational goals.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Medical degree from a school recognized by the Georgia Composite Medical Board.

  • Completion of an ACGME-accredited psychiatry residency.

  • Board-Certified Psychiatrist (required).

  • Senior-level experience with substantial supervision of psychiatrists.

  • Knowledge of Joint Commission, APA, and forensic psychiatric standards.

  • Experience in forensic, inpatient, or public-sector psychiatry strongly preferred.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Medical degree recognized by the Georgia Composite Medical Board and licensure (or license-eligibility) to practice medicine in Georgia.

  • Three years of experience at the level of Physician 3 (HCP162) or equivalent; OR

  • Equivalent combination of degree and progressive leadership experience per state job specifications.
