Construction Project Engineer

Duties, Functions & Responsibilities

A Construction Project Engineer supports project management, field operations, and engineering teams to ensure construction projects are completed safely, efficiently, on schedule, and within budget. Responsibilities typically include:

Project Coordination & Support

  • Assist the Project Manager and Superintendent in daily project operations.

  • Coordinate project activities, schedules, and resources between field personnel, subcontractors, vendors, and engineers.

  • Prepare and maintain project logs, documentation, and reports.

  • Review and interpret construction plans, specifications, and submittals.

  • Track project progress and report delays, issues, or deviations to management.

Technical & Engineering Responsibilities

  • Support layout, measurements, and quality checks to ensure work conforms to project documents.

  • Assist with material take-offs, quantity tracking, and cost analysis.

  • Analyze drawings, identify discrepancies, and prepare Requests for Information (RFIs) as needed.

  • Manage and review submittals, shop drawings, and closeout documentation.

  • Ensure compliance with engineering standards, building codes, and client requirements.

Field Support & Jobsite Tasks

  • Conduct daily jobsite walks to monitor work progress, safety, and quality control.

  • Assist with project scheduling, manpower forecasting, and equipment coordination.

  • Document field conditions through photos, reports, and progress tracking.

  • Support construction layout, surveying tasks, and verification of field dimensions.

  • Ensure installations are completed according to plans, specifications, and approved submittals.

Contract, Financial & Administrative Duties

  • Assist in preparing budgets, cost estimates, and cost-control updates.

  • Track material deliveries, equipment usage, and subcontractor performance.

  • Help manage change orders, purchase orders, and subcontract agreements.

  • Monitor project expenses, billing, and project financial documentation.

  • Review and verify subcontractor invoices and progress pay applications.

Safety & Compliance

  • Promote and support company and OSHA safety standards on all job sites.

  • Participate in jobsite safety meetings, toolbox talks, and inspections.

  • Ensure proper documentation of incident reports, safety observations, and corrective actions.

  • Verify that all workers follow proper PPE and safety procedures.

Communication & Team Coordination

  • Maintain clear communication with project management, field staff, subcontractors, and clients.

  • Attend project meetings and assist with meeting minutes, agendas, and follow-up action items.

  • Coordinate with engineers, architects, inspectors, and vendors to resolve project issues.

  • Support client relations by addressing questions and providing project updates.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Maintain organized project documentation in company systems.

  • Assist with project closeout, including as-builts, O&M manuals, and punch lists.

  • Support continuous improvement, quality initiatives, and company best practices.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Project Manager or executive leadership.
