Job Description

What you'll do:

**Serves in an advisory role, providing guidance in performing highly advanced engineering work activities and projects, and sharing 765kV knowledge, theory and historical perspective with Transmission Planning and Transmission Engineering. Support project work and develop AEP engineering expertise, applying engineering knowledge in a safe, effective, efficient and economic accomplishment of assigned objectives.

Work in concert with Transmission Planning, Transmission Engineering and other stakeholders to identify required electrical studies for atypical projects, specifically competitive off-footprint EHV and UHV projects. Identify the studies required during the planning and scoping phases of the project to enhance competitive project bid effectiveness and to help expedite project delivery.

Perform or support internal or external resources to perform electrical studies.

Be the liaison for electrical studies between the Transmission Planning organization, consultants, and Transmission Engineering.

Interpret electrical study results and effectively communicate implications to Transmission Planning, Transmission Engineering and Transmission Field Services, including potential mitigations required, needed work practices, etc.

Apply electrical theory and study results to support Transmission Engineering in developing new standards. This will include developing new structure arrangements and structure families.

Share 765kV knowledge, theory and historical perspective with Transmission Planning and Transmission Engineering. The purpose of this is to both support project work and also to develop AEP engineering expertise.

Prepare and present formal training (PowerPoints, White Papers, etc.) and informal project/task-specific training on fundamental and advanced power systems concepts and 765kV knowledge to Transmission Planning and Transmission Engineering (e.g. Surge Impedance Loading, Transient Over-Voltage, Electric and Magnetic Fields, Dynamic Stability, Design Considerations, Maintenance Considerations, etc.).

**Provide expertise and advise on work activities and projects requiring technical knowledge in a safe, effective, efficient and economic accomplishment of assigned objectives.

Principal Accountabilities:

Makes technical decisions based on calculated risks without management review.

Identifies, resolves and initiates solutions to highly complex problems that are unique to AEP and the electric utility industry and that also require specialized knowledge of equipment and /or problem-solving techniques.

Develops, recommends and implements plans that include all scheduling, resource and cost information and control required to address complex problems that require input and efforts of a wide array of entities both internal and external to AEP

Leads organizational unit activities in specific areas of plant, region, or outage/project work activities.

Leads project development activities related to specific, unique, and/or highly specialized areas.

Leads, facilitates and coordinates work activities of others within the work group, team or those located externally to AEP and assumes the role of a project or function manager for assigned tasks.

Partner with employees and management in identifying and analyzing business, performance and learning needs, problems or expectations.

What we're looking for

Has typically acquired 10 or more years of related engineering experience along with a bachelor's degree in engineering in a program accredited by ABET*

Or 8 years of related engineering experience along with a Master's degree or PhD in engineering from a program accredited by ABET*.

Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in any U.S. state or Puerto Rico** is required for this position unless approval to waive this requirement is given by the organization's EVP.*ABET - Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.

Acceptable alternatives:

Bachelor's degree in engineering (non-ABET), plus a Professional Engineers (PE) license in any state of the U.S.

Or Bachelor's degree in engineering (non-ABET) plus a Master's degree or PhD in engineering from a university with an ABET accredited Bachelor's program.

** Confirmation is required to ensure the PE obtained in Puerto Rico aligns with NCEES standards.

Must possess a professional or trade certification such as a CCMP , CETa, IQCP, PMP, etc. before the progression into this level.
