Distribution Reliability Engineer

The position falls within the Distribution Department of the organization. The Planning Engineer will be working with higher level engineers and the customer planning team to run analysis on the grid system. They will be working in collaboration with the customer to get all their studies approved and will be teaming up with an engineer at the customer to sign off on their work. They will be conducting load flow studies, voltage drops, and inter-connectabilities.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Engineering & Design Develop and review DACR Phase 3 models, scopes, and device spreadsheets per AEP standards. Create CYMDIST base cases and self-contained scheme models for distribution automation.
  • Perform CYMTCC coordination and arc-flash studies following AEP Overcurrent Protection Guidelines.
  • Design and document recloser placements, tie configurations, and control upgrades.
  • Develop and maintain block diagrams, settings spreadsheets, and load limit analyses.
  • QA/QC & Integration Execute QA/QC reviews using the DACR Engineering Checklist, verifying milestones at 50%, 70%, and final design completion.
  • Coordinate with engineers, planners, and field personnel to ensure constructability and adherence to DACR technical specifications.
  • Support data governance and document storage in Smartsheet, STORMS, and the ADS SharePoint repositories.
  • Automation & Protection Configure and validate protection settings for Smart Switches, G&W Vipers, S&C Tripsavers, SEL Relays/Controls, and other automated devices.
  • Support communication integration for telemetered reclosers, including radio and antenna upgrades.
  • Assist with verification for breaker relay changes and protection updates.

Software Experience Requirements

  • Software Proficiency Modeling & Analysis: CYMDIST, CYMTCC, ASPEN OneLiner, PI Vision, Voyager, S&C Tripsaver
  • Software QA/QC & Data Systems: Smartsheet, STORMS, EEMS, ADS Repository, DAE Database, Central Station, CRM, TLMR
  • GIS & Design Tools: Atlas, GridzlyBear, ArcGIS, AutoCAD, Revu Bluebeam, Electric Office
  • Automation & Reporting: Excel (advanced), SharePoint

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Electrical or Power Systems Engineering from an ABET-accredited university.
  • 36 years of utility or EPC experience in distribution automation, protection, or reliability engineering.
  • Familiarity with distribution design standards and CYME/ASPEN workflows.
  • Strong understanding of protective device coordination, relay settings, and feeder automation logic.
  • PE or EIT certification preferred (or eligible within 12 months).

Requisite Abilities and Skills

  • QA/QC experience with Smartsheet, STORMS, or related document control systems.
  • Understanding of communication system integration (TCOMM, MRO).
  • Experience with distribution constructability and engineering best practices.
  • Strong written and verbal communication
  • Demonstrate ability to work with others in supplying information and seeking assistance as necessary
  • Demonstrate willingness and capabilities to assume leadership roles

Job Type & Location

This is a Permanent position based out of New Albany, OH.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $45.00 - $65.00/hr.
