Established in 1974, we at Shenandoah Veterinary Hospital have been happily serving the needs of the community's pets for nearly 36 years. Founded by K.W. Gilpin D.V.M, our team of veterinary professionals has grown over the years and currently includes seven veterinarians, seven registered veterinary technicians and numerous other support staff. Each staff member contributes knowledge and experience in a variety of companion animal topics. We have team members who are experienced in dealing with all aspects of animal care from highly technical surgical procedures to training and behavioral problems in pets of all ages.

Shenandoah Veterinary Hospital is a family run business with long-term ties to people of the Eastern Panhandle. Dr. Gilpin's family grew up right here in Martinsburg and sons Darin and Brian joined the practice after graduating from veterinary school with a continued commitment of providing outstanding veterinary care for all their friends and neighbors here in Berkeley, Jefferson and Morgan counties and surrounding areas.

Job Description

Position: Full-Time Veterinarian

We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Associate Veterinarian to join our team. The ideal candidate is a team-oriented professional who thrives in a fast-paced environment and is passionate about animal health and client education. This position involves both medical and surgical responsibilities, with mentorship available for newer graduates.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide high-quality medical, surgical, and dental care to a variety of companion animals

  • Perform physical examinations, diagnose conditions, develop treatment plans, and communicate clearly with clients

  • Maintain comprehensive and accurate medical records

  • Collaborate with veterinary technicians and support staff to provide exceptional patient care

  • Participate in continuing education and stay current on industry developments

  • Contribute to a positive, respectful, and team-oriented clinic culture

  • Educate clients on preventative care, wellness, and treatment options

Qualifications
  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree or equivalent from an accredited university
  • Active Veterinary State License (or ability to obtain upon hire)
  • Current DEA License (or ability to obtain upon hire)
  • USDA Accreditation (or ability to obtain upon hire)

Special Working Conditions:

  • Ability to sit or stand and work at a computer for long periods of time.
  • Ability to be confident around animals (i.e., dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, etc. Candidate to confirm species treated with practice leadership for additional clarity.)
  • Client needs and work volume may occasionally require more than 40 hours per week to complete essential duties of this job. This position may require special working hours, including working weekends, evenings and/or holidays.
  • Must have mental capacity and processes for reasoning, remembering, mathematics and language ability (reading, writing, and speaking the English language) to perform the duties proficiently.
  • The noise level in the work environment is moderately high. Ear plugs will be available upon request. 
  • Job requires sufficient ambulatory skills in order to perform required duties while working.
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and climb as well as manipulate (lift, carry, move) up to 50 pounds.
  • Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm-hand-finger dexterity with the ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard and operate other equipment as required.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Hospital teammates are routinely exposed to a variety of animals that may bite, kick or scratch, and on occasion, may be exposed to anesthesia, radiation, biological or zoonotic hazards and/or medication/controlled substances.
