Directional Drill Locator

The Directional Drill Locator is responsible for accurately locating bore paths and guiding the drill operator during horizontal directional drilling (HDD) for fiberoptic conduit placement. This role requires strong field awareness, experience with Ditch Witch locating systems, and the ability to read construction plans, utility maps, and engineered bore profiles.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Operate Ditch Witch locating equipment to track drill head depth, pitch, and location.

• Communicate bore path adjustments to drill operator in real time.

• Read and interpret engineered bore profiles, utility locate marks, and construction drawings.

• Perform utility potholing/daylighting to positively identify utilities.

• Identify hazards, conflicts, and obstructions along the bore path.

• Record depth, alignment, and redline deviations as needed.

• Assist drill operator with setup, mixing mud, and site preparation.

• Ensure safety compliance per OSHA and company standards.

• Complete daily logs, JHAs, pre-trip inspections, and safety forms.

• Assist with conduit pullback and verification after installation.

• Support cleanup, restoration, and overall jobsite organization.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Required experience using Ditch Witch locating equipment.

• Minimum 1–2 years directional drill locating in fiber or utility construction.

• Ability to read maps, plans, and bore profiles.

• Understanding of utility locates and ground conditions.

• Valid driver’s license and good driving record.

• Ability to lift 75 lbs and work outdoors in all weather.
