Job Description

Introduction
Our client is a rescue-based animal welfare organization seeking a Rescue Veterinarian to join their mission-driven team. Dedicated to saving lives and strengthening the bond between people and animals, the organization focuses on providing medical and surgical care to rescued dogs and cats, many of whom are pulled from high-intake or high-risk shelters. The Rescue Veterinarian will play an essential role in managing complex medical cases and providing high-quality care for animals in foster homes as part of a compassionate, community-focused team.

Working Hours / Rota
This is a full-time position averaging 40 hours per week, with a Monday through Friday schedule. Mondays are designated for administrative duties, which may be completed remotely or on-site. Tuesdays are dedicated surgical days, while Wednesday through Friday are appointment-based days for fostered animals, incorporating both booked appointments and drop-offs. Typical hours are 6 hours on Monday, 10 hours on Tuesday, and 8 hours Wednesday through Friday. There are no weekend or regular on-call requirements, though occasional after-hours emergencies may arise, for which additional compensation is provided.

Role Description and Responsibilities
The Rescue Veterinarian will oversee the medical management of all rescue animals, performing examinations, diagnosing and treating a range of medical conditions, and conducting surgical and dental procedures including spays, neuters, mass removals, and soft tissue surgeries. The role involves a high degree of autonomy, requiring confidence in independent clinical decision-making and comfort handling complex or unusual medical cases similar to those seen in emergency medicine. The veterinarian will collaborate with a capable technical team, delegating appropriately to certified veterinary technicians and assistants operating under a rescue license. The position also includes helping to build and refine medical protocols and improving the efficiency of operations. This role is best suited for a DVM with a minimum of five years of experience and a background in rescue, shelter, or emergency medicine who enjoys practicing independently without a client-facing focus.

Practice Details
The facility supports a foster-based rescue model, with no on-site shelter. Clinical and veterinary spaces are shared within a larger building that includes a public-facing veterinary team, though the rescue's operations are conducted separately. The current setup includes a full surgical suite, digital radiography, ultrasound, and in-house IDEXX laboratory equipment (with most samples sent out), with a wet table being added. The organization is also building out a dedicated treatment space for the veterinary team. This role emphasizes hands-on medical care, efficiency, and collaboration with a team focused on saving animals from euthanasia and giving those in need of medical attention a second chance. There are no wellness or client appointments.

Team
The Rescue Veterinarian will be the sole veterinarian working alongside two certified veterinary technicians and two veterinary assistants. The team is highly skilled and independent, handling all client communication, discharges, and coordination with fosters. Appointments currently run in 30-minute blocks with a goal to streamline toward 15 minutes as workflow evolves. The environment is collaborative, efficient, and mission-driven, where every team member contributes directly to improving animal welfare and saving lives.
