What you will do
We're hiring! Johnson Controls is seeking an Embedded Hardware Engineer responsible for the design, development, validation, and support of active magnetic bearing (AMB) control system hardware for our JCI-Synchrony Engineering team! This position is onsite at our Salem, VA, facility. Candidates must be commuting distance or be able to relocate.
How you will do it
- Design and validate embedded hardware and firmware for Active Magnetic Bearing (AMB) control systems
- Create schematics, select components, and design PCB assemblies
- Develop manufacturing test procedures and fixtures
- Troubleshoot and resolve hardware issues in production and various field environments
- Research and validate component substitutions
- Optimize designs for performance, reliability, and cost
- Collaborate with contract manufacturers and third-party design partners
What you will need
Required
- Bachelors or Masters degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related discipline
- 5+ years embedded hardware development experience for high-voltage, high-reliability, safety-critical systems
- Schematic and PCB layout with Altium Designer
- Proficient in PCBA design for microprocessors, DSPs, memory, serial interfaces (USB, Ethernet, SPI, I2C, RS485), data converters (A/D, D/A), and distributed power supplies
- Knowledge of PWM control, EMC layout, and thermal design
- Familiar with lab diagnostics and programming tools (e.g., JTAG, FPGA)
- Experience with real-time closed-loop control systems
Preferred
- Industrial Control Systems or experience with rotating machinery
- SoC / SoM architecture & development
- FPGAs, VHDL, Verilog, Xilinx Vivado
- Embedded software development (RTOS, Git, C/C++, Python, Java, STM32/ARM, Windows, and Linux)
- Signal and systems analysis (Bode plots, Nyquist frequency, etc.
HIRING SALARY RANGE: $86,000 - $115,000 (Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, location and alignment with market data.)
