Position: Title: JIC Recreation/Activity Coordinator

Immediate Supervisor: Program Manager

Starting Salary: $29.43 per hour. Position is subject 180-day probationary period.

Position Summary:

The Recreation/Activity Coordinator is responsible for developing, coordinating, and implementing recreational and leisure activities for youth the Juvenile Intervention Center. This role aims to foster positive physical, mental, and emotional well-being through structured and engaging programs. The ideal candidate will provide therapeutic recreational opportunities, encourage teamwork and cooperation, and support rehabilitative goals while maintaining a safe and secure environment.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

Design and schedule age-appropriate recreational, athletic, and leisure activities to promote physical fitness, skill development, and social interaction.

Incorporate therapeutic and educational components into programming to support the facility's rehabilitative mission.

Develop individual and group activities, including sports, arts and crafts, outdoor adventures, and life-skills workshops.

Oversee youth participation in all activities, ensuring compliance with facility rules and safety protocols.

Monitor behavior, intervene as needed, and manage conflict to maintain a positive environment.

Conduct regular safety checks of equipment and activity areas.

Work closely with counselors, educators, and case managers to align recreational programs with youth treatment plans.

Coordinate with external organizations or volunteers for specialized programming or events.

Communicate program goals, schedules, and expectations to staff and participants.

Maintain accurate records of attendance, incidents, and progress related to recreational activities.

Manage inventory of recreational supplies and equipment, ensuring timely procurement and maintenance.

Prepare reports on program effectiveness and suggest improvements based on feedback and outcomes.

Foster self-esteem, resilience, and pro-social behavior in youth through positive reinforcement and mentorship.

Address individual needs and interests by adapting activities to accommodate diverse abilities and backgrounds.

Perform other duties assigned

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in Recreation Management, Physical Education, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field. Minimum of two years' experience in recreational programming, preferably working with at-risk youth or in a corrections or residential facility setting OR Three (3) years of a combination of education and experience. Experience must account for at least two of the 3+ years.

Must be 21 years old.

Employee will be working in a maximum security 24-hour facility which will require the ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays. May be scheduled or mandated to work up to 16 hours per day with little to no prior notice. Assigned shifts may be subject to change.

Must have strong verbal and written communication skills.

Candidates who do not successfully complete who do not successfully complete the Diana Screen assessments cannot reapply for a position in the JIC.
