Position: Food Service Worker
Location: Hastings Middle School
Time Schedule: 3 hr p/day ; 10:15 a.m. - 1:15 p.m.
Salary Rate or Ratio: $17.29 - $19.20 p/hour
Reports to: Director of Nutritional Services

Description: The FSW plays a crucial role in the support for preparing and serving nutritious and appealing meals to students. The FSW role combines various tasks to include food preparation, serving, cashiering and maintaining a clean and organized cafeteria and kitchen. The FSW will promote healthy eating and support a service friendly, team and welcoming environment.

Qualifications:
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
- One to two years related experience
- Serve Safe food handlers certification or the ability to obtain
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Supervisor and/or Board of Education may find appropriate
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to work effectively with others
- Ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively both orally and in writing
- Effective, active listening skills
- Organizational and problem solving skills
- Thorough understanding of friendly customer service
- Ability to read and understand verbal and written instructions, written warnings and labels
- Ability to operate a point of sale system and other related computer equipment
- Basic math/bookkeeping skills
- Such alternatives to the above knowledge, skills, abilities as the Supervisor and/or Board of Education may find appropriate
Essential Functions:
- Ensure safety of students
- Foster and maintain a positive, welcoming and respectful environment in the cafeteria
- Assist in the preparation of menu items and/or fruit and vegetable bar
- Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations
- Fill milk, condiments, fruit/veggie bar etc… as needed
- Prepare point of sale system before lunch starts and operate POS during service
- Ensure correct identity of student via name and picture once they enter their ID
- Accurately enter the student’s meal selections into the POS
- Handle cash transactions, process meal payments and provide accurate change per policy. Record all transactions on the POS. Keep cash handling procedures in accordance with district policy.
- Prepare deposit per district policy and procedure.
- Ensure all signs posted accurately reflect current menu and pricing
- Ensure that appropriate paperwork is available at the point of sale system
- Maintain respect at all times for confidential information, e.g., free and reduced lunch students
- Interact in a positive manner with staff, students, and parents
- Assist cook if time allows
- Attend meetings and completes online in-services as required
- Help restock a la carte items, fruit/veggies, condiments, silverware etc…
- Assist in cleaning cooking and serving areas as well as washing and putting away any dishes or pots and pans following proper cleaning and sanitizing protocols
- Promote good public relations
- Serve as a role model for students by demonstrating positive behavior, attitude and values
- Engage with students in a positive manner, promoting a healthy attitude towards food and nutrition.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:
- Follows district attendance and timesheet/time clock procedures
- Respond to routine questions and requests in an appropriate manner
- Ability to work as a team and assist the department as needed
- Ability to organize and maintain lunch count when point of sale system is not working
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Nutritional Service Supervisor
- Serve as a role model for the District.

Additional Working Conditions:
- Occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and tissue
- Occasional operation of a vehicle under inclement weather conditions, i.e., being prepared to come to school on all scheduled school days, except calamity days
- Occasional interaction with unruly adults and children
- Occasional requirement to travel, i.e., to pick up food or materials
- Occasional exposure to fumes or airborne particles
- Frequent exposure to loud noises
- Occasional overtime work will be requested and expected of the employee
- Frequent requirement to stand, walk, talk, hear, see (color vision required), read, speak, reach, stretch with hands and arms
- Frequent requirement to lift, carry, push, and pull up to a maximum of 50 pounds
- Frequent excessive standing during assigned workday
- Frequent repetitive hand motions, e.g., operating point of sale system
- Occasional requirement to climb, balance, stoop, kneel and crouch
