Production Veterinarian Johnstown, OH
Job Description
Job ID#:

Job Category:
Live Production - Poultry & Swine
A respected, family-owned pork producer is seeking a Production Veterinarian to support herd health across an established genetics-to-finish system. This individual will oversee sow farms, gilt development units, and collaborate with finishing service teams. Unlike highly corporate environments, this role offers true autonomy, healthy herds, and the chance to contribute to long-term innovation rather than crisis management.
You'll report directly to ownership and serve as the primary veterinarian for the sow system while also partnering with a retiring DVM who will remain as part-time support. The herds are stable, the culture is collaborative, and the expectation is simple: keep things running smoothly, and make them even better where you see opportunity.
THE ROLE:
* Maintain herd health and welfare across four sow units (2,500 head each) and supporting gilt herds
* Strengthen and enforce biosecurity and disease prevention protocols
* Split time between field work (~50%) and documentation / analysis (~50%)
* Oversee the production manager, gilt selection teams, and collaborate with the service reps to optimize performance
* Diagnose health concerns and advise on treatment, vaccination, and reproductive programs
* Design and implement research / improvement projects - autonomy encouraged
* Monitor performance data and identify areas for operational gains
* Support genetics programs, including GGP / GP herds
* Train and mentor staff on herd health standards and best practices
* Maintain accurate veterinary records and reporting to leadership
WHY YOU'LL LOVE THIS JOB:
* Healthy herds - no constant firefighting
* Autonomy to lead and innovate without bureaucracy
* Competitive salary
* Company car, phone, and computer provided
* Performance bonus negotiable - ownership is open to building one with you
* Relocation assistance available
* No overnight travel - all farms are within a 2.5-hour radius
* Family-oriented culture
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE:
* DVM with U.S. veterinary licensure (or eligible for Ohio license upon hire)
* 5+ years of sow production experience in the U.S. - finishing experience is a bonus but sow background is essential
* Has a TN visa, permanent residency, or U.S. citizenship
* Self-motivated, independent, and improvement-minded
* Team-oriented communicator who builds strong relationships across field teams
* Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred but not required
WORKING CONDITIONS:
* Regular travel to sow units, gilt herds, and finishing sites - all day trips only
* Occasional participation in industry events, conferences, or training
* Blend of field time and office-based data/documentation work
