Responsibilities:
  • The Senior Process Engineer reports to the Operations Manager and plays a key role in ensuring the paperboard manufacturing department operates safely, efficiently, and sustainably. This role is responsible for maintaining a reliable, cost-effective supply of high-quality paperboard that meets or exceeds customer expectations.
  • The Senior Process Engineer serves as a technical resource for the operations team, leading process optimization, project execution, and continuous improvement initiatives across the paper mill. The position may supervise up to five (5) direct reports and provide technical leadership to a department of approximately 80 employees.
  • Focused on both day-to-day operations and long-term strategic decision-making, this role is accountable for maintaining multimillion-dollar capital assets, ensuring product quality, and fostering a culture of operational excellence. The position may also act as backfill for the Operations Manager to ensure leadership continuity. The ideal candidate is technically driven, safety-minded, and poised for advancement within the organization.
  • Lead and track safety performance; manage safety programs, annual training, and regular safety meetings.
  • Ensure safe job performance, address issues promptly, and promote regulatory compliance.
  • Review all safety incidents and lead root-cause analysis (cause mapping).
  • Conduct regular safety tours and employee engagements to reinforce safe behaviors.
  • Coach supervisors in managing crews for consistent adherence to safety standards.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, environmental, labor, and government regulations.
  • Support and strengthen the company's behavior-based safety program.
  • Promote a zero-incident culture in all Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) areas.
  • Develop and execute strategic plans to advance production systems from current to future state.
  • Drive operational excellence and motivate teams to achieve record-setting performance.
  • Provide strategic leadership and coaching through a shared operational vision.
  • Implement and sustain continuous improvement initiatives that deliver measurable results.
  • Develop and manage the department's operating budget and expenses.
  • Recommend and execute equipment upgrades, system enhancements, and process innovations.
  • Mentor direct reports to build leadership capability and strengthen the talent pipeline.
  • Collaborate with engineering, business unit leaders, and shift supervisors to optimize production.
  • Empower teams to make informed, data-driven decisions that support business goals.
  • Define operational priorities and coordinate cross-departmental activities to maximize performance.
  • Maintain sufficient raw material inventories to support uninterrupted production.
  • Verify that all products meet customer and technical specifications.
  • Partner with the Quality/Technical team to identify and resolve quality issues.
  • Review and update training manuals to reflect best practices and procedural changes.
  • Lead crews in identifying and eliminating waste to improve process efficiency.
  • Apply strong analytical and problem-solving skills to drive corrective actions and resolve issues promptly.
  • Communicate effectively across all organizational levels to align goals and share progress.
  • Collaborate with other department managers to coordinate mill-wide activities.
  • Document and communicate policy and procedural updates resulting from Kaizen or CI events.

Required Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering.
  • 5 years of experience in operational paper machine environment.
  • Experience in pre-engineered buildings desired.
  • TPM/Lean experience desired.
  • Previous leadership and project management experience.
  • Exposure to hazardous chemicals used in manufacturing process, including heat.

Salary Range: $85K-$100K annually DOE
