    The City of Charlottesville is seeking qualified candidates to join our Public Works Department – Public Service Division as a Maintenance Worker III . This position will be part of a dedicated 5-member Concrete Crew responsible for supporting Capital Improvement Projects related to sidewalk repair and construction throughout the City. Under the direction of a Maintenance Crew Supervisor II the selected candidate will assist in performing skilled and semi-skilled labor in the installation, maintenance, and repair of sidewalks and related infrastructure .

    This position performs responsible semi-skilled work in a variety of construction, repair and maintenance assignments involving the use of specialized tools; occasionally operates specialized and other equipment in connection with the semi-skilled tasks to which assigned. Does related work as required.

    As of March 28, 2024, this position is part of the Labor and Trades bargaining unit, as defined by the City’s Collective Bargaining Ordinance (Ordinance No. 22-128). Starting pay for this position is based on applicable education, experience, and internal equity.

    The hiring amount for this position is between $20.45 - $25.14 an hour ($42,536.00 - $52,291.20 Annually). This is a full-time, non-exempt, position which provides excellent benefits including 13 paid holidays, paid vacation and sick leave, health insurance options with employer contribution, employer-paid life insurance, City's retirement options, gym membership reimbursement, and continuing education/training opportunities.

    • The City of Charlottesville manages its own retirement system and does not participate in VRS, however the City has a Portability Agreement with VRS and there are certain provisions that must be met.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma or GED. If no diploma or GED is obtained, must have a minimum of 2 years of direct work experience in the field.
    • Requires a minimum of 1 year experience in a similar position as a skilled worker in the maintenance, repair and or construction activity to which assigned; some prior experience in the operation of the equipment to which assigned.
      • (Relevant experience may include tasks such as forming, pouring, and finishing concrete; setting grades; working with curb, gutter, or sidewalk infrastructure; or operating tools and equipment commonly used in street and sidewalk construction.)
    • Must have valid VA driver's license by employment start date.

    Special Requirements:

    • May require the ability to obtain a CDL within 6 months of hire.
    • Must successfully pass a pre-employment physical.
