What You'll Do:
Responsible for overseeing and coordinating the daily staffing and operation of the sterile processing team. Responsibilities include: scheduling, vacation planning, implementing sick call coverage, coordinating workflow, reviewing time and attendance records, completing corrective action plans with guidance from Manager, performing competency assessments, observing and documenting performance and coaching employees for performance improvement, interviewing and selecting employees, monitoring department compliance, and service as a content expert resource. Participates as a staff member to provide intermittent coverage as needed at all workstations. Handles concerns, HR compliance reporting, and participates as part of management and quality improvement teams. Promotes the Essentia Health vision statement.
This supervisor ensures that all surgical instruments and medical devices are properly cleaned, disinfected, sterilized, and distributed in compliance with regulatory standards and hospital policies. This role provides leadership, training, and quality assurance to ensure patient safety and support efficient surgical and clinical operations. Requires working in a hospital or clinical environment and will involve exposure to biological and chemical hazards that require appropriate PPE. Requires standing for extended periods and handling of surgical instruments and equipment. Key responsibilities & requirements include:
- Supervise and coordinate activities of sterile processing technicians, including scheduling, workflow management, and performance evaluations.
- Ensure all instrumentation and equipment are cleaned, assembled, packaged, sterilized, and stored according to established procedures and manufacturer guidelines.
- Maintain compliance with regulatory and accreditation agencies such as The Joint Commission, AAMI, AORN, CDC, and OSHA.
- Monitor sterilization records, biological indicators, and documentation for accuracy and completeness.
- Implement and enforce infection control practices within the department.
- Develop and conduct training programs for SPD staff to ensure competency and adherence to best practices.
- Participate in audits, quality improvement initiatives, and process evaluations to enhance efficiency and safety.
- Collaborate with operating room and nursing leadership to ensure timely delivery of sterile items and optimal patient care support.
- In-depth knowledge of sterilization techniques, infection control standards, and regulatory compliance.
- Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced healthcare environment.

- 2 years' experience in a surgical, sterile processing, materials management or related position required.
- Must be able to obtain status as a Certified Sterile Processing Technician (CRCST) through CBSPD or HSPA within 24 months of hire.
