Physical Therapist/Physical Therapist Assistant

Classification: Certified, exempt

Qualifications:

State Licensed Physical Therapist, Physical Therapist Assistant, or eligibility for Licensure

Degree in Physical Therapy from an accredited program preferred

Experience in the educational setting preferred

Reports to: Director of Special Education; It should be noted that a PTA will also report to a supervising Physical Therapist.

Position Overview: The School District of Washington is seeking a physical therapist to assess and develop plans to provide students with disabilities access to educational services. This includes implementing coordinated activities to increase access to the educational environment and increase independence with functioning. Ideal candidates demonstrate the ability to form professional relationships with staff, effective oral and written communication skills, high level organizational skills, and the ability to work with multiple stakeholder groups. This position has a key role in fostering a positive, productive, and safe environment for students. This position is considered an additional responsibility added to the scope of typical school nursing duties.

Essential Responsibilities:

  1. Conduct educationally relevant comprehensive physical evaluation to evaluate students’ disability needs.
  2. Develop individualized plans based on those needs.
  3. Administer physical therapy interventions to students as educationally relevant to assist in skill development, independence, and other needs as appropriate.
  4. Educate students, parents, and other providers on the role of physical therapy, individualized plans, and self and home care as required.
  5. Monitor student progress and adjust plans as needed. This includes collecting and providing data to support progress, adjustments, and/or next steps.
  6. Collaborate with other professionals working with students in the school setting and other healthcare professionals as needed.
  7. Maintain accurate records and timelines associated with plans such an IEP, 504 plan, or health plan.
  8. Regular and reliable attendance is necessary in order to perform the functions of this position.
  9. Perform associated roles as required for building operations and to respond in the event of an emergency.
  10. Perform other related duties as assigned or required for District operations.

Other Related Responsibilities:

  1. Maintains appropriate student records and timelines associated with school nursing duties.
  2. Attend meetings and workshops necessary for District operations and to enhance knowledge in areas of general responsibility.
  3. Maintains confidential nature of all school related material.
  4. Attend events outside of the regular school day designed to bring the public into the school, serve on a committee, plan appropriate instruction, and attend required meetings associated with the role of “teacher”.

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: The District Physical Therapist works the school calendar with some opportunity for activities in the summer (summer school). This includes 183 paid days with applicable health and ancillary insurance, annual paid leave award, and defined pension benefit. Starting salary established by the Board of Education as it aligns to the teacher pay scale.

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated by the supervisor using the District’s professional support staff evaluation tool.

PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND VISUAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk and sit. Additionally, the employee may occasionally be required to push or lift up to 50 lbs as necessary for the safety and well-being of others. Lastly, this job requires the employee to have the vision ability to read handwritten or typed materials, and meet multiple demands from several people while interacting with other staff and the public.
