Probation Officer - Electronic Monitoring

Purpose of Position

To monitor assigned offenders placed on electronic monitoring as part of community control and/or pre-trial supervision. To successfully fulfill the essential job functions, one must be able to interact with accused and/or convicted criminal offenders using evidence-based practices while employing effective interventions and supervision strategies.

Essential Job Functions & Competencies

  • Provide positive reinforcement and build rapport with offenders;
  • Effectively and efficiently maintain and manage a caseload of offenders as assigned;
  • Monitor and assess the offender's compliance with Court-ordered conditions which includes regular contact with the offender, attorneys, law enforcement, employers, treatment providers, the Court, family, and community agencies;
  • Manage electronic monitoring equipment setup, installation, and instruction process, which includes travel to a jail facility;
  • Manage electronic monitoring equipment inventory;
  • Monitor offender movement based upon privileges and inclusionary/exclusionary zones assigned by the Court;
  • Respond to inclusionary/exclusionary zone alerts in a timely manner;
  • Assess offender risk level to determine recommendations for the appropriate level of supervision;
  • Appear in Court and participate in proceedings determining the eligibility and parameters for potential electronic monitoring placements;
  • Prepare summaries and Court documents regarding the offender for the Court's review;
  • Report indigency status for financial purposes and collect payments for fees while in the program;
  • Correspond and collaborate with community resource providers and collateral contacts concerning offender's progress;
  • Review information regarding the offender's cases;
  • Utilize case management system to enter data;
  • Develop and sustain productive working relationship with local law enforcement;
  • Monitor random drug screens of offenders;
  • Maintain a professional demeanor during stressful situations;
  • Respond courteously to inquiries;
  • Maintain proficiency and applicable certification with all job and training requirements;
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending professional training and conferences;
  • Adhere to assigned work schedule while exhibiting regular and predictable attendance;
  • Maintain professional conduct and attire;
  • Maintain effective lines of communication with all staff and stakeholders;
  • Promote and adhere to departmental policies and procedures;
  • Maintain confidentiality of department information; and
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required to Perform Essential Job Functions:

  • Performance of essential functions requires interaction with accused and convicted criminal offenders;

  • Ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work; tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation. This position may involve infrequent lifting, carrying, running, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate to heavy weight (50 pounds).

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in criminal justice or closely related field, or equivalent experience (applicant may substitute 2 years of related experience for each year of required education);
  • Must hold and maintain a valid Driver's License

Preferred Qualifications

  • One-year experience involving:
  • community supervision of offenders (probation, parole);
  • counseling; or
  • maintaining a caseload in a case management setting.
