REPORTS TO:
Principal, Director of Student Services, and Head Wrestling Coach
EMPLOYMENT STATUS:
Temporary, part-time
FLSA STATUS:
Non-Exempt
POSITION SUMMARY:
Provide specialized personal, communication, and safety support to a deaf and visually impaired student participating in the wrestling program.
The aide ensures accessibility, supervision, and assistance in both practice and competition settings, while maintaining a safe and inclusive athletic environment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Provide communication support, such as interpreting directions from coaches (using sign language or adapted communication strategies, as appropriate).
Assist with orientation and mobility in wrestling facilities, gyms, and competition areas.
Ensure the student's safety during practices, drills, travel, and competitions.
Reinforce instructional strategies, accommodations, and modifications as directed by the Special Education team.
Monitor and assist the student with skill development, athletic drills, and equipment use.
Supervise the student during team activities, ensuring inclusion with peers while providing appropriate support.
Collaborate with coaches, teachers, and parents to implement the student's Individualized Education Plan (IEP) accommodations in the athletic setting.
Record and report observations regarding progress, participation, and any safety concerns.
Support the establishment of a positive, supportive, and respectful environment within the wrestling program.
Maintain the confidentiality of information that is not public domain.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Perform other duties as assigned by the wrestling coach, the Principal, and/or the Special Education Coordinator.
QUALIFICATIONS:
High School diploma or GED preferred.
Aide permit or other appropriate State license/certificate if needed.
Experience or training in working with students with sensory impairments preferred.
Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) or willingness to learn basic signs strongly preferred.
Alternative to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and/or Board of Education may find appropriate.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Ability to communicate effectively with deaf and visually impaired students using appropriate supports.
Ability to assist with physical activities in an athletic environment.
Willingness to acquire training in CPR, First Aid, and Crisis Prevention.
Ability to collaborate with coaches, special education staff, and parents.
Strong awareness of safety, supervision, and accessibility needs in athletic contexts.
EQUIPMENT OPERATED:
Wrestling and athletic equipment.
Communication aids or assistive devices as required by the student's IEP.
General office and instructional equipment as needed.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Frequent physical activity, including standing, walking, lifting, kneeling, and assisting with athletic drills.
Possible exposure to loud gym environments, bodily fluids, and physical contact associated with athletics.
Requirement to assist with student ambulation, positioning, or safety restraints if necessary.
Evening and weekend hours required for practices and competitions.
Potential exposure to blood or other body fluids.
Potential exposure to unruly people.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Length of Employment: Contract runs concurrent with school year; wrestling season will run approximately November through February.
