The Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (The James) seeks an exceptional leader to serve as the next Chief Medical Officer (CMO). The CMO is responsible for leading The James medical staff and ensuring the delivery of the highest quality care to its patients. The CMO will work collaboratively with Seniors Leaders to move The James into the top tier of cancer programs nationwide and to navigate the challenges and changes within the current healthcare regulatory environment. The CMO reports to The James CEO and will provide on-going counsel and partnership with other executive leaders on physician and clinical issues. The CMO will work to enhance alignment and communication with The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center (OSUWMC), College of Medicine (COM), Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center (OSUCCC), and other campus entities that engage with The James on matters regarding medical staff affairs and clinical performance.
Primary Responsibilities:
Foster a culture of innovation, inclusive leadership, and mission-driven excellence across the clinical enterprise
Partner with cancer program leadership and stakeholders to develop, articulate, and promote the clinical vision and strategy for medical affairs within The James
Ensure physician accountability to compliance, standards of professionalism, and competence
Optimize patient safety, quality, experience, and satisfaction in the inpatient and ambulatory settings to achieve top decile performance
Advance value-based medicine strategies aimed at improving patient outcomes while ensuring resource efficiency
Direct The James associate CMOs and The James medical directors across the cancer clinical enterprise
Collaborate with OSUWMC department chairs on physician recruitment to streamline access and build clinical programming
Measure and respond to issues impacting physician morale, performance, and wellness
Represent The James as an active member of the Cancer Program nationally, regionally, and locally within the OSUWMC and across the University
The CMO will work in close partnership with The James Chief Operating Officer, The James Executive Directors, and the OSUCCC Director. The CMO role is an 80% FTE commitment: 30% providing clinical vision and oversight, 20% improving quality, safety, and patient experience, 20% serving as physician liaison, and 10% serving as Medical Director of Philanthropy and Community Engagement. The CMO will be expected to maintain an active clinical practice at 20% FTE, for a total of 100% FTE.
Qualifications:
MD, DO, MBBS, or equivalent degree
US Board certification
Licensed/ license-eligible in the state of Ohio
Minimum of 10 years clinical experience in oncology clinical practice
Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible leadership experience within a cancer hospital or clinical practice setting
Exceptional leadership skills, with the ability to collaborate with a wide variety of stakeholders, inspire and motivate others, successfully lead others through change, and act as a consensus builder
Demonstrate working knowledge of healthcare quality and safety principles, metrics, and best practices
Proven experience engaging broadly with investigators fostering a research community that supports career growth, collaboration, and long-term institutional success
Familiarity with best practices in physician recruitment and retention strategies
Experience with team wellbeing, including best practices and current trends
Experience developing innovative and interactive clinical educational programs, including CME for physicians, staff, residents, medical students and administration
Embraces a growth mindset while demonstrating a high level of flexibility
Navigate complex challenges with determination and initiative
Proven experience ensuring physician accountability to compliance, standards of professionalism and competence
Maintains up-to-date knowledge of current and emerging trends in cancer care to inform strategic decision-making and enhance clinical/ operational effectiveness
