DescriptionJOB TITLE: Mental Health Technician (MHT)JOB SUMMARY: The Mental Health Technician (MHT) works daily in partnership with the Mental Health Coordinator to provide care and support to individuals experiencing mental health challenges in a variety of settings, including our outpatient and residential facilities. The MHT aids in the treatment, observation, and rehabilitation of patients under the guidance of our healthcare professionals such as our psychiatrist, physicians, and registered nurses. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Client Care:
- Aid clients with daily activities, including hygiene, eating, and exercise.
- Monitor patients’ physical and emotional well-being, reporting changes to the clinical team.
- Administer prescribed medications as directed by licensed professionals (if certified to do so).
- Therapeutic Support:
- Facilitate individual or group therapeutic activities to encourage socialization and skill building.
- Provide a safe, compassionate, and supportive environment for clients.
- Implement treatment plans under the direction of clinical staff.
- Observation and Documentation:
- Observe and document patients’ behaviors, mood changes, and responses to treatment.
- Record vital signs, food intake, and other relevant health metrics.
- Communicate effectively with team members to ensure continuity of care.
- Crisis Management:
- Intervene in situations involving patient agitation, aggression, or distress.
- Use de-escalation techniques to manage behavioral crisis.
- Ensure patient and staff safety by adhering to facility protocols and guidelines.
- Administrative Tasks:
- Maintain correct and confidential patient records.
- Aid with scheduling appointments or coordinating transportation for patients.
- Participate in staff meetings and training sessions to improve care practices.
Qualifications
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:- Effective communication and people skills.
- Compassionate, empathetic, and patient-centered approach to care.
- Ability to manage stressful situations and remain calm under pressure.
- Knowledge of mental health disorders and treatments.
- Education – High school diploma or equivalent (required).
- Post-secondary certification in Health mental health, psychology, or related fields (preferred).
- Experience -- Minimum of two years’ experience working and/or volunteering within healthcare, social work, or healthcare settings.
- Training in crisis intervention or behavioral management is highly desirable.
- Occasional standing, walking, lifting, reaching, kneeling, bending, stooping, pushing, and pulling for extended periods of time.
- Occasional lifting and/or moving up to twenty-five pounds.
- Frequent sitting.
- Ability to communicate by speaking and hearing in person or on the phone.
