The Pediatric Mental Health Therapist, Associate (a Licensed Professional Counselor, Associate, or Licensed Master of Social Work) will work as part of an interdisciplinary, team-based program that cares for patients enrolled in the Texas Child Health Access Through Telemedicine (TCHATT) program at Dell Medical School. TCHATT provides telemedicine or telehealth programs to school districts to help identify and assess the behavioral health needs of children and adolescents and provide access to mental health services.

This is a state funded position sponsored by the Texas Child Mental Health Care Consortium (TCMHCC). TCMHCC was created by the 86th Texas Legislature to leverage the expertise and capacity of the health-related institutions of higher education to address urgent mental health challenges and improve the mental health care system in this state in relation to children and adolescents.

The University of Texas, Dell Medical School (DMS), is a Health Research Institute (HRI) for the Texas Childrens Mental Health Care Consortium. The program and projects of the Dell Medical School, HRI work to address the clinical needs of the programs which address urgent mental health challenges and improve the mental health care system in Texas for children and adolescents.

This position has an end date of 08/31/2026, renewable based upon availability of funding, work performance, and progress toward goals. Funding is expected to continue.

A flexible working arrangement agreement can be accommodated based upon the needs of the program and with supervisor approval. Remote work will require reliable internet access and a suitable private workspace free from distractions.

Purpose

This position will support Texas Child Health Access Through Telemedicine (TCHATT) patients, guardians, and schools to improve a childs overall functioning by providing counseling and care management services using a patient-centered, collaborative approach with an interdisciplinary team. The Pediatric Mental Health Therapist, Associate, will conduct behavioral and mental health assessments, formulate and implement comprehensive assessments and individualized treatment plans, and complete interdisciplinary team consultation as needed.

The therapist will possess strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively with patients, ability to work independently with a strong attention to detail, effective oral and written communication skill, and will possess a commitment to professional ethical and practice standards. Clinical supervision towards LPC and LCSW licensure will be provided.

Responsibilities
  • Under the supervision of an LPC-S or LCSW-S, the Pediatric Mental Health Therapist, Associate, completes a bio-psychosocial assessment of patients. The applied biopsychosocial model and approach will include cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, supportive therapy and/or other techniques and modalities as clinically indicated. Completes relative evaluations and treatment plans and provides individual, family, and group psychotherapy. Participates in screening, tracking, and reporting of patient outcomes and social work and professional counselor interventions. Completes documentation in the clinical record related to interaction with individuals-served, families and other service providers in an accurate and timely manner, and in accordance with professional ethics and with both federal and state regulations.

  • Provides clinical support for an interdisciplinary team who is responsible for coordinating direct and/or indirect services to school staff, guardians and students. Assists students/guardians/school staff by (a) sharing information and perspectives on how other life factors are affecting mental health or other medical conditions and (b) helping students/guardians/school staff to build coping strategies, psychological skills, and ways to improve daily function and quality of life. Provides care management to include connecting patients to needed resources such as community mental health services, and other resources in the community. Provides support and evidence-based strategies to schools seeking consultation on mental health needs on their campus.

  • Provides discipline-specific knowledge to interdisciplinary team around mental health, cultural competency, social determinants of health, and innovative ways to approach chronic illness in patients. Participates in value-based research initiatives and research for patient care operational improvements.

  • Develops and maintains working relationships with behavioral health providers in the community to create a network of aligned providers. Maintains a highly collaborative approach to a cohort of clinical team members, as well as the local, regional and national professional communities.

  • Participates in meetings, continuing education opportunities, academic and research opportunities to optimize patient best practice and interdepartmental collaboration. Participates in clinical supervision, consistent with applicants licensure and experience. Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

A Licensed Master of Social Work or Licensed Professional Counselor Associate in the state of Texas. 1000 hours of clinical experience. Experience working with children, adolescents, and/or family systems. Strong technology skills, including the ability to perform computer tasks and use the electronic health record systems independently. Proficiency in electronic systems including, but not limited to, Google Suite, Trayt, Slack, Athena, Calendly.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Bilingual (English and Spanish). Strong organizational, planning, follow-up/follow-through, and time management skills. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to work in a fast-paced, multi-provider practice environment.

Salary Range

$60,000 + depending on qualifications

Working Conditions
  • May work around standard office conditions

  • Occasional weekend, overtime and evening work to meet deadlines

  • Occasional interstate, intrastate and international travel

  • Field work as necessary

  • The supervisor will work to identify the needs of the School and communicate the days and/or times expected to report on-site, up to 40 hours per week. The needs of the Dell Medical School will be reviewed on a regular basis, and ample notice will be provided of any changes. Remote work will require reliable internet access and a suitable workspace free from distractions.
