Job Title: Journeyman HVAC Technician - Data Center Operations
What this job involves: As a Journeyman HVAC Technician at JLL, you will be responsible for maintaining the critical cooling infrastructure that protects sensitive IT equipment in data center environments. You'll work with precision cooling systems, chillers, computer room air handlers (CRAHs), and building automation systems to ensure optimal temperature and humidity control in mission-critical facilities. This role demands expertise in complex HVAC systems that operate continuously to support our clients' digital infrastructure.
Your day-to-day tasks will include:
Install, maintain, and repair precision cooling systems including CRAHs, computer room air conditioning (CRAC) units, and in-row cooling systems
Perform preventive maintenance on chillers, cooling towers, pumps, and heat exchangers to ensure peak performance
Monitor and adjust building automation systems (BAS) to optimize cooling efficiency and maintain environmental setpoints
Troubleshoot HVAC system failures using diagnostic tools and thermal imaging equipment to minimize downtime
Execute planned maintenance activities during scheduled windows while maintaining critical cooling redundancy
Respond to emergency cooling system alarms and temperature excursions with immediate action
Collaborate with electrical and facilities teams to ensure proper integration of cooling and power systems
Maintain accurate records of all HVAC maintenance activities, system performance data, and environmental conditions
Support cooling system upgrades and capacity expansions to meet growing data center demands
Desired experience and technical skills:
Requirements:
Valid Journeyman HVAC license or equivalent certification in applicable jurisdiction
Minimum 5 years of commercial or industrial HVAC experience
Experience with precision cooling systems and computer room environmental controls
Knowledge of chiller systems, cooling towers, and hydronic distribution systems
Ability to read and interpret HVAC schematics, P&IDs, and technical documentation
Proficiency with refrigeration systems, including leak detection and refrigerant recovery
Strong troubleshooting skills using pressure gauges, temperature sensors, and diagnostic equipment
Physical ability to work in mechanical rooms, at heights, and lift up to 50 lbs
Availability for on-call emergency response and flexible scheduling
Preferred:
Data center or mission-critical facility experience
Experience with Liebert, Stulz, or similar precision cooling equipment
Knowledge of building automation systems (Trane, Johnson Controls, Schneider Electric)
EPA Universal Refrigerant Handling certification
Experience with variable frequency drives (VFDs) and energy management systems
Associate degree in HVAC Technology or Mechanical Engineering
Certified Energy Manager (CEM) or similar energy efficiency certification
