Job Description

Veterinary Technician
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt, Full-Time

Your Mission

As a Veterinary Technician for the Animal Rescue League of Iowa, you will play a critical role in advancing our mission by supporting veterinarians and providing medical care to animals in both clinic and shelter settings. Your work ensures high-quality care for patients while supporting pet owners with the knowledge and resources they need to keep their animals healthy.

What You’ll Do

In this role, you will assist veterinarians during examinations and surgeries, monitor anesthesia, and provide attentive post-operative care to ensure the comfort and recovery of animals. You will conduct diagnostic procedures, including lab tests, X-rays, and other essential screenings, while maintaining accurate medical records for each patient. You will work directly with clients, educating them on preventative care, treatment plans, and post-treatment instructions to strengthen the human-animal bond. Beyond direct animal care, you’ll help maintain clean and organized work areas, operate and care for diagnostic equipment, and contribute to a safe and collaborative team environment.

What You Bring

You have a High School Diploma or GED and experience working in a veterinary clinic or animal hospital. An associate’s degree in Veterinary Technology and certification as a Veterinary Technician are preferred. You bring strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment. With excellent communication and interpersonal skills, you are comfortable working with both clients and colleagues. You also bring knowledge of animal behavior, sound problem-solving skills, and a compassionate approach to handling animals in sometimes stressful situations.

Working Conditions

This role requires frequent lifting of up to 50 lbs. and the ability to stand or sit for long periods of time. Work may expose you to odors, animal waste, moderate noise, and the possibility of bites, scratches, or contagious animal diseases. Safety and proper handling protocols must be followed at all times to maintain a secure and healthy environment.

Why Work at the ARL?

At the ARL, you’ll be part of a mission-driven team dedicated to helping animals and the people who love them. You’ll gain experience working in both clinic and shelter environments, have the opportunity to grow your skills, and make a direct impact on the lives of pets and families in our community.

Employment in this position is at-will, meaning that either the employee or the ARL may terminate the employment relationship at any time.

In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and/or applicable state regulations, the Animal Rescue League will provide reasonable accommodations to qualified individuals with disabilities and encourages prospective employees and incumbents to discuss potential accommodations.
