The Waterloo Birth Center consists of labor & delivery, postpartum care, and a Level III NICU. We are a 23 bed unit, with 19 of those rooms being large LDRP that allow for families to stay in one room for the entire stay. We have a two room OR suites for patients needing a c-section. We are one of a very few integrated neonatal intensive care units in the nation. Our NICU infants remain in the LDRP room with the family. This allows for true family centered care and bonding while both recover after delivery. We are blessed with a team of providers that consist of OBGYN doctors and midwives. We have a below average primary c-section rate and a high VBAC success rate.

As a Level III NICU, we provide care to infants 28+ weeks gestation. We also have a NICU transport team that typically will help transport infants from smaller hospitals to our NICU when a higher level of care is needed.

Position Summary

Acts as a clinician, educator, consultant and researcher in the development and maintenance of quality patient care and

professional practice standards. Adheres to MercyOne's performance expectations and performs all defined services

and other related duties in accordance with the mission, vision and values of MercyOne.

Major Areas of Responsibility/Essential Function

Utilizing the nursing process, analyzes, interprets, advises and consults with staff, management and

other healthcare providers to provide high quality contemporary care.

Conducts regular patient care rounds to assess the appropriateness of clinical practice.

Utilizes manual/automated information systems to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of

care.

Provides immediate/ongoing education and information to staff.

Follows up with manager/director for appropriate intervention.

Provides clinical leadership through the development/ implementation of educational plans based on

identified needs.

Facilitates the orientation of new nurses in assigned clinical areas.

Consults and serves as a professional resource to staff.

Plans, develops and conducts education for staff.

Assists in updating and evaluating staff clinical competencies in assigned clinical area.

Identifies and implements practices and procedures that are research based to enhance clinical

outcomes.

Evaluates nursing research literature for incorporation into patient care activities.

Evaluates patient outcomes and assists staff in revising the plan of care to meet changing

needs.

Works collaboratively with other healthcare practitioners to identify relevant clinical problems and viable

resolutions.

Applies expert knowledge to facilitate change in practice area.

Participates in performance improvement in clinical setting.

Facilitates an interdisciplinary approach to care.

Assists in the development and implementation of professional practice standards for nursing.

Improves patient care delivery by evaluating existing standards of care and initiating new

standards as needed in collaboration with Management in the practice area.

Advances nursing practice through personal education/research activities.

Adheres to all safety, infection control and colleague health policies and procedures.

Attends required safety programs.

Appropriately and consistently uses the personal protective equipment required of the job.

Knows and can demonstrate departmental emergency procedures for fire, disaster and other

emergency situations.

Reports and removes unsafe equipment/furniture.

Asks for assistance when needed to assure safety for all involved.

Maintains a safe working environment and practices safe working habits.

Certification/Licensure Required for Job:

MSN Required

Three to five years in specialty area

Licensure as RN in Iowa. Certification in specialty

area required within 6 months of hire. Mandatory

Reporter. BLS, ACLS.
