The Psychiatric Registered Nurse (RN) will provide mental health nursing care in a correctional setting, including psychiatric assessments, medication administration, crisis intervention, and patient education. This role will collaborate with behavioral health and medical teams to develop and implement treatment plans while ensuring compliance with facility policies, state regulations, and mental health care standards. The Psychiatric Registered Nurse (RN) will also monitor patient progress, document care accurately, and contribute to a safe and therapeutic environment.

How YOU can Make an Impact:

  • Conduct psychiatric assessments for incoming inmates, identifying mental health concerns, and establishing care plans based on patient histories and current symptoms.

  • Provide psychiatric nursing care for inmates with mental health disorders, including those with chronic mental illnesses, mood disorders, anxiety, and substance use disorders.

  • Monitor and assess patients' mental health status, identifying changes in behavior, mood, and cognition to adjust care plans accordingly.

  • Administer psychiatric medications, ensuring proper dosage and observing for side effects or adverse reactions.

  • Respond to psychiatric emergencies, including suicidal ideation, self-harm behaviors, and mental health crises, providing immediate interventions and referrals when necessary.

  • Conduct therapeutic interventions, such as crisis counseling and emotional support, in compliance with mental health protocols and treatment plans.

  • Provide care for patients with dual diagnoses, coordinating with interdisciplinary teams to address both medical and psychiatric needs.

  • Work with mental health professionals (psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers) and interdisciplinary teams to provide comprehensive, holistic care for psychiatric patients.

  • Develop and implement individualized psychiatric care plans, ensuring continuity of care and addressing mental health needs within the correctional setting.

  • Educate inmates on mental health topics, such as coping strategies, stress management, and the effects of psychiatric medications.

  • Communicate psychiatric concerns effectively with facility staff, including security and healthcare teams, to ensure proper care and safety for both inmates and staff.

  • Mentor and supervise LPNs and nursing assistants, providing guidance on the management of psychiatric patients and ensuring they follow appropriate care protocols.

  • Assume leadership in psychiatric crisis situations, providing direction to the nursing team and other facility staff to ensure a coordinated and efficient response.

  • Ensure team adherence to psychiatric care protocols, maintaining a high standard of care in the management of mental health patients.

  • Ensure compliance with psychiatric care regulations, including state, federal, and facility-specific guidelines regarding mental health treatment, confidentiality, and patient rights.

  • Monitor and assess patients' psychiatric medications and interventions for side effects, adjusting treatment as necessary to prevent harm or complications.

  • Maintain confidentiality of patient psychiatric information and ensure all mental health records are properly documented and stored according to HIPAA and other regulatory standards.

  • Adhere to facility safety protocols, especially when dealing with inmates in psychiatric distress or crisis, ensuring a safe environment for both patients and staff.

  • Provide training to staff on psychiatric care protocols, helping other nursing and correctional staff recognize mental health crises and understand the appropriate response.

  • Participate in the development and delivery of mental health education programs, providing staff and inmates with essential knowledge about managing mental health issues within the facility.

  • Engage in ongoing professional development in psychiatric nursing, staying current with trends and advancements in psychiatric care and mental health treatment.

  • Work flexible shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, to provide continuous psychiatric care for inmates.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

What we Ask of YOU:

  • A current, valid state(s) licensure, certificate and/or credentials documenting ability to practice in applicable role (i.e. CMA, LPN, RN, LMHP, etc.).

  • A High School diploma or GED is required.

  • An Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Healthcare, Nursing, or a related field is preferred but not required.

  • 1-3 years of experience in a healthcare setting, preferably in a correctional healthcare or similar environment.

  • Experience in roles that involve direct patient care or administrative support in a regulated environment is preferred.

  • Strong understanding of healthcare regulations, policies, and procedures as they relate to the correctional setting is an advantage.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage time effectively, adhere to protocols, and deliver high-quality service in a fast-paced, structured environment.

  • Active CPR/BLS certificate required (American Heart Association/American Red Cross guideline approved).
