Job Title: Senior Data Scientist, Imageomics Institute and AI and Biodiversity Change Global Center (ABC) Department: Engineering | Computer Science and Engineering

The Imageomics Institute and ABC Global Center Senior Data Scientist provides broad technical and software support for data products and related key NSF grant and sub-grant activities within the Institute and Center. This position actively engages in and supports research efforts of the institute and center, contributing to the development of scientific publications. The Data Scientist advances research and resource convergence efforts between Imageomics and ABC, and enhances collaboration with external collaborators, including working with partners to submit grant proposals for funding joint projects.

The Data Scientist sets the standards for, and guides/directs the creation of, repositories for curating and sharing datasets, code, and models; standardizing data integration, preprocessing, and workflows; coordinating model deployment; and visualization of outcomes. This position is responsible for establishing and leading strategic directives for the creation, implementation, and dissemination of community standards for data, model, and code publication. As well as providing guidance and support for collaborative project management integration with technical tools. The Data Scientist develops workshops and curricula to teach students, staff, and faculty in data science methods and technologies.

The Data Scientist works independently to evaluate and select, then direct the deployment and maintenance of the necessary software and frameworks, enabling and curating access to the necessary infrastructure, and providing the necessary technical tutorials for team members. The Data Scientist also leads the data team in ensuring that Imageomics and ABC public data, model, and software products are Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR) for the general scientific community.

This position may also serve on organizing committees for scientific workshops; and develop and direct international-scale data science challenges in partnership with leaders from other HDR institutes. As the data science representative for Imageomics and ABC, the Data Scientist presents research and research products at various domain-relevant conferences and workshops.

Technical oversight, support, and expertise for the grant(s) is provided by Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio and the sub-award partners. This position is located in Columbus, Ohio. The position reports to the Managing Director of the Imageomics Institute and ABC Center, works closely with the Imageomics Institute's Director of Informatics and Infrastructure, and provides technical leadership to the OSU-based data team.

Specific activities and tasks at the Imageomics Institute and ABC Center include:

  • Leading the data analytics team on data management efforts for institute- and center-wide projects, providing strategic guidance and direction throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Spearhead the collaborative effort to coordinate data, code, and model availability to the team and for publications.
  • Directing the curation of Institute and Center data and creation of code and model sharing repositories, including a wide variety of image data sets and their associated metadata.
  • Establishing and instituting best practices, conventions, and metadata standards for the institutes data, code, and ML model products. Create necessary shared ontologies for data and metadata.
  • Developing tutorials and training Institute and Center members in relevant conventions, practices, and standards for data, model, and code sharing and archival.
  • Coordinate to ensure the publication of Machine Learning models, datasets, and software products produced by the team to appropriate model, data, and code repository and archive.
  • Consult and provide guidance to the Research Data Scientist and Research Software Engineer on the location, evaluation, and facilitation of acquisition and access to the necessary data infrastructure.
  • Actively engage with and contribute to Institute and Center projects throughout their lifecycle, advancing data related products and publications.
  • Facilitating data-enabled research convergence and initiatives with internal and external collaborators, including the submission of grant proposals for funding of joint projects.
  • Presents research and research products at various domain-relevant conferences and workshops, as appropriate, to represent the data related aspects of the institute and center mission.
  • Other duties as requested or required, whether or not specifically mentioned in this job description.

The Imageomics Institute is a $16M National Science Foundation (NSF) Harnessing the Data Revolution (HDR) Institute established to create machine learning tools using publicly funded collections of digital image data from national centers, field stations, museums and individual laboratories that will enable scientists to study how function follows form in all areas of biology and expand public understanding of the rules of Life on Earth and how it evolves.

The AI and Biodiversity Change (ABC) Global Center brings together a team of researchers from ecology and computer science to develop new AI-enabled, data-supported approaches for understanding the impacts of environmental changes on biodiversity. The ~$9M Center includes partnerships with a global network of collaborators from the US, Canada, Australia, the UK, Africa, India, Central America, and the EU, including representatives from academic institutions, multi-institution research collaborations, governmental agencies, NGOs, and industry.

Qualifications

Required:

Bachelors Degree or equivalent experience: Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering or other data analysis-intensive discipline. Four years of work experience in the following:

  • addressing complex data science challenges.
  • Proficiency in data science stack and general frameworks.
  • Experience with High Performance Computing, cloud computing platforms.
  • Experience with Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning, deep learning frameworks.
  • Experience with biological datasets.
  • Experience with working in dynamic research environments.
  • Experience working in and leading interdisciplinary teams to solve data-driven problems.
  • Experience in grant proposal writing.

Additional Information:

The target hiring range for this job profile is $88,300 - $115,350. The actual salary paid to an individual will vary based on multiple factors, including but not limit to, education, years of experience, internal equity, etc.
