The Fuels and Low Carbon Technology (F&LCT) is a team of over 300 technologists, scientists and engineers who provide pioneering solutions to support bps Fuels, Refining, Bioenergy and Hydrogen businesses. We also support the Technology group through Innovation Management, Modelling, Digital Science and our academic research programmes.

The Bioenergy & Hydrogen Technology team (B&HT) will bring together scientists and engineers dedicated to delivering low carbon energy solutions that align with bps strategy while also supporting the technological needs of our oil and gas projects. The team works across many bps businesses supporting areas such as novel feedstocks, biofuels and advanced biofuels, and hydrogen.

The opportunity

The biogas RA/SRA will assist with anaerobic digestion research and development. The successful candidate will support execution of experiments to improve biogas production from a wide slate of feedstocks in anaerobic digestion. The individual will join a group of interactive scientists and should have strong communication skills and outstanding inter-disciplinary problem solving and critical thinking skills, with a strong interest in the pursuit of scientific discovery. This position requires extensive hands-on work at the bench with recent experience of independently delivering experimental results.

Key accountabilities

  • Independently and safely set up, operate, sample, analyze, take down, and clean anaerobic digestion and pretreatment experiments
  • Operate batch and continuous anaerobic digestion experiments from 0.5 20 L with daily sampling, feeding, and maintenance
  • Independently analyze digestate samples for pH, COD, VFA/TIC, HPLC, GC, and other metrics
  • Clean and organize laboratory glassware and supplies
  • Handle biological samples ranging from agricultural residues to animal manures daily
  • Contribute to multiple experiments and projects concurrently, managing up to 20 reactors each day
  • Assist in the development of new analytical assays/techniques
  • Contribute to new experimental idea generation
  • Attention to detail and trouble-shooting skills
  • Thorough record keeping of all experiments
  • Interpret data and data quality and ability to communicate to cross functional scientific audiences
  • Support HSSE requirements for operation and maintaining a biosafety level 2 (BSL2) facility
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, multi-disciplinary environment, both independently and within a project team
  • Promote safety initiatives and champion compliance with bps Code of Conduct

Essential criteria and qualifications

  • Education: Bachelors degree or equivalent experience from the following fields: chemical engineering, bioengineering, biochemistry, enzymology, molecular biology, biology, synthetic biology, chemistry or related fields
  • Experience independently setting up and operating biological experiments
  • Experience collecting, organizing, analyzing, and presenting experimental data

Desirable criteria

  • Research and lab-based experience in anaerobic digestion or similar fermentation processes involving microbial consortia
  • Experience with HPLC, GC, and other analytical techniques relevant to anaerobic digestion
  • Experience working in a BSL2 facility
  • Experience and ability to work effectively in a multi-tasking, fast pace, and matrix environment, with skills on prioritizing, delivery and being flexible in response to change

How much do we pay ? 78- 112K. *Note that the base pay range listed for this position is a good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible base compensation at the time of posting. This position is eligible for US Benefits Core. This position offers paid vacation depending on your years of relevant industry experience and will range from 120-240 hours if vacation per year for full time employees (60-240 hours of vacation per year for part time employees). You will also be eligible for 9 paid holidays per year and 2 personal choice holidays.
