Job Summary and Qualifications

The Certified Surgical Technologist works directly with the physician and the circulating registered nurse in each surgical procedure, understanding his/her scope of practice based upon training, and the facility policies and outlined in the job description.

Duties (included but not limited to):

  • Works closely with all surgeons

  • Must be able work in a high stress area

  • Follow instructions from many directions, including Surgeons, Anesthesiologist, registered nurse, and any ancillary staff members

  • Must be able to work in an area that is crowded due to equipment necessary to perform the procedure

  • Must have accurate hand-eye coordination to assist the physician during cases where threading instrumentation through confined channels is essential

  • While building knowledge base, need to also build anticipatory skill to assist the surgeon through cases

  • Cleaning of the OR at the beginning of each day, using an antiviral solution and a lint free cloth on all horizontal surfaces

  • Pull trays from Sterile processing to assist co-workers as needed

  • Use of the chain of command and providing job related input in the work environment

  • Adhere to safety guidelines, AORN guidelines regarding practices in the Surgical suites, reports unusual or inadvertent event

  • Secure specimens during and or post-surgical procedures

  • Cross train to the Endoscopy labs as needed or desired

  • Following all Infection control guidelines, Aseptic technique, Instrument and Needle counts, noting instrument integrity at the beginning and end of cases.

  • Ensuring that cases are picked properly, checking with the staff nurse and physician regarding any additional supplies to ensure the smooth running of surgical cases

  • At the end of the day, removing all extra equipment, putting away supplies and general tidying of the O.Rs and the department in general.

  • Re-stocking of warmers, and supply areas

  • Notifying the Charge Nurses of outdates, areas that require additional attention and cleaning

  • Assignments in Sterile processing as needed, decontamination, case picking, putting away supplies

  • Updating Preference cards as assigned

  • The surgical tech will be expected to participate in the on-call roster as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
  • (CSA) Certified Surgical Assistant, or (CST) Certified Surgical Technologist
  • Certificate, or Vocational School Graduate
  • Minimum of one year Surgical Tech experience
  • Three years Surgical Tech experience preferred
