Westerville Parks and Recreation is a national award winning department where the community works and plays in a "City within a Park". The Parks and Recreation department operates over 650 acres of parkland, 51 miles of trails, and four premier facilities, including the Westerville Community Center, Westerville Senior Center, Highlands Park Aquatic Center and the Everal Barn and Homestead. We serve over 38,000 citizens and plan over 3,000 programs annually. The City of Westerville is seeking a park and recreation professional with a passion for creating innovative programs and services for the 55+ adult community.
This is responsible supervisory work coordinating and supervising a variety of senior adult recreation programs, leagues, activities and special events for the City. Work involves planning, coordinating, programming, and implementing activities and events, preparing program budgets, and supervising employees involved in various programs and activities, in compliance with established rules and regulations.Work is performed under the general direction of the Senior Center Manager and/or the Recreation Adminstrator. Employee must have the ability to implement a comprehensive recreation program for senior adults, make proper safety decisions, handle scheduling concerns, settle disputes, handle program eligibility questions; negotiate various contracts and oversee program budget. Work is reviewed through periodic meetings; review of reports, and for compliance with policies and procedures. Supervision extends over employees in all assigned programs.

Plans, coordinates, supervises, assigns and implements a variety of recreation programs, leagues, activities and special events; prepares monthly and seasonal programming; coordinates services offered; writes program descriptions; enters data into program registration software.
Supervises part-time, seasonal instructional and programming staff; recruits and interviews employees; makes hiring recommendations; provides proper training, assistance and guidance; conducts performance evaluations; recommends leave and overtime; makes recommendations for discipline; reviews and approves payroll.
Performs community center senior center manager-on-duty responsibilities; oversees front desk operations and money handling procedures; ensures patron safety; set up and clean-up rooms; coordinates with facility staff.
Monitors registration and attendance of classes and programs; assesses feasibility and public interest; cancels classes and programs; submits periodic reports on programs and activities.
Prepares and monitors annual program budget; provides ongoing financial, activity and attendance information and reports to supervisor; prepares purchase requisitions for all activities, events and supplies; maintains personnel and administrative records and reports.
Negotiates contracts with instructors, vendors, entertainment and sponsors for programs and events; monitors contract compliance.
Provides and ensures positive customer experiences; Handles complaints and solves problems; negotiates with participants.
Develops and recommends policies and procedures relating to recreation programming and activities; interprets, applies and enforces city and department policies and procedures.
Prepares and updates newsletter articles; proofreads and prints newsletter; prepares timely promotional information.
Coordinates the senior transportation program. Safely transports program participants to and from residences, doctors' appointments, senior center community activities, and facilities and on field trips; determines routes; ensures safety procedures are followed.
Prepares transportation service and driver safety informational materials.
Monitors vehicles performance; ensures routine maintenance checks are performed; maintains cleanliness with vehicles; refuels vehicles, as needed.
Maintains standards to meet CAPRA (Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies Requiem).
Develops and Executes short erm and long term goals and objectives for the Department.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Possession of a Bachelor's degree in Gerontology, recreation administration, sports management, adult learning or related field and 2-3 years progressively responsible experience in Senior Adult recreation program management; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, abilities and skills:
Knowledge of modern principles, methods, practices and equipment relating to public recreational programs.
Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, regulations and standards relating to public recreation.
Knowledge of safety standards and precautions for recreation programs.
Some knowledge of basic principles and practices of supervision.
Some knowledge of City personnel rules, policies, and procedures.
Ability to demonstrate proper driving skills and handling a multiple passenger vehicle or van.
Ability to coordinate, assign, train, supervise, coach, guide and evaluate the work of assigned staff.
Ability to develop and evaluate programs and services that meet basic and recreational needs to the community.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with other employees, program participants and the general public.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with other employees, community members, contractors, other agencies and the general public.
Ability to prepare clear and concise written reports and keep accurate records.
Ability to use a computer, applicable software programs (including but not limited to Google Workspace, RecTrac, When To Work, etc.) and modern office equipment.

Ability to obtain CPR/First Aid/AED certification.
Possession of a valid Ohio driver's license.
