10 Stressors Keeping Job Seekers Up at Night, According to Actual Candidates

Searching for a job can bring a rollercoaster of emotions. There are moments of excitement when you find a promising opportunity, followed by periods of anxiety while you wait for a response from a potential employer. There’s also stress that comes with interviewing, negotiating salary, and getting rejected – sometimes after you were sure you impressed the hiring manager.

According to our December 2025 survey of 731 job seekers on our platform, candidates are feeling the pressure. Of those surveyed, 61% said they were stressed about their job search, with 22% feeling extremely or very stressed about their job search (Figure 1). Meanwhile, 37% were not at all stressed.

Recognizing that the degree of stress may correlate to how urgently someone may need a new job, we also asked respondents to note their employment statuses (Figure 2):

What is your current employment status?

40%
I’m employed and casually seeing what’s out there
7%
I’m employed and searching for a second or part-time job

4%

A deeper look into the data confirmed that job hunting stress is much higher among active job seekers and those who have a greater sense of urgency (understandably so): Half (50%) of candidates who were “extremely stressed” were unemployed and needed a new job ASAP; 33% were employed and actively seeking a new job.

Only 2% of job seekers who were employed and casually looking for a job and less than 0.8% who were employed and looking for a second job were extremely stressed.

Job Search Stressors & Job Seeker Quotes

The final question in our survey was simple and open-ended: “What is the most stressful part of the job search?”

Respondents anonymously wrote in their responses, with many coming across as honest, insightful, and relatable. From the agony of waiting to the frustration of automated application systems, their feedback paints a clear picture of modern job hunting hurdles.

Based on this data, we’ve identified 10 common stressors keeping candidates up at night and pulled several direct quotes to illustrate their frustration with each.

1. Waiting & Uncertainty

The most cited culprit of job search anxiety was the period of waiting to hear back from an employer and the uncertainty that comes with it.

After investing time and effort into an application or an interview, being left in limbo can be mentally exhausting. This lack of control over the timeline can create significant stress, making it difficult to focus on other opportunities.

Job Seeker Quotes:

  • “For me, the most stressful part is waiting to hear back after applying or interviewing. You keep checking emails and wondering if you said the right things, and the silence can be really frustrating and discouraging.”
  • “The most stressful part of searching for a job is the uncertainty during the waiting period after submitting applications or completing interviews. Even when you are well-qualified, timelines and decisions are often outside of your control.”

2. Ghosting or Lack of Feedback/Communication

Closely related to waiting to hear back from employers is the complete absence of communication from recruiters or hiring managers. Many job seekers expressed frustration with employers who fail to provide any updates... not even a simple automated email notifying them that they are not the right fit.

This silence makes it impossible to know if your application was received or the next steps in the hiring timeline. A lack of feedback leaves you feeling disrespected and undervalued, turning the job search into a one-sided conversation.

Job Seeker Quotes:

  • “I had some interviews and even did some video tasks or assessments for next steps and then never heard back.”
  • “Hearing back from those I applied to. It is difficult to even receive a rejection email. I wish I could hear back from companies.”

3. Rejection

Rejection is an expected part of any job search, but that doesn’t make it any easier. Receiving a rejection email or phone call after investing time and effort into an application or interview can sting.

Over time, repeated rejections can chip away at your confidence and motivation, making it difficult to stay positive about future opportunities. Sometimes, the hardest part is not knowing what you could have done differently or how to improve next time.

Job Seeker Quotes:

  • “Applying and receiving rejection emails.”
  • “Constant rejection.”

4. Finding the Right Fit

Finding a job that is more than a paycheck is essential for modern job seekers. People want a role that aligns with their skills, career goals, values, and personal needs, and identifying opportunities that tick all the right boxes can be challenging. Vague job descriptions and a lack of transparency from employers can make it hard to determine if a position is truly the right long-term fit.

Job Seeker Quotes:

  • “Finding a job that can balance out perfectly with my personal life, and that provides a livable wage.”
  • “Everyone sounds like a fantastic, the best, amazing employer until you’re there for a while.”

5. High Competition

In today’s market, it is not uncommon for a single job post to receive hundreds of applications. Knowing you are competing against a massive pool of candidates can be intimidating. This high level of competition makes it feel difficult to stand out and is one of the biggest reasons why the job search is stressful, especially when you apply for numerous positions without getting a response.

Job Seeker Quotes:

  • “The competitive job market, because I have to apply to so many jobs just to land a few interviews.”
  • “Too many applicants and too much competition. My resume gets lost among hundreds of others.”

6. Fake or Misleading Job Postings

A particularly aggravating job search stressor is the prevalence of fake, misleading, or “ghost” job postings. In fact, 39.9% of job seekers surveyed for our 2025 State of Online Recruiting Report said they were frustrated by fake or fraudulent jobs.

These are listings for roles that are not actively being filled, scams designed to collect personal information, and/or vaguely defined. Investing time to apply for a position that isn’t real is a significant waste of energy and can erode trust in the hiring process.

Job Seeker Quotes:

  • “Fake or misleading job postings are the most stressful part. Investing time in applications and interviews only to realize the role isn’t real or actively hiring is frustrating and discouraging.”
  • “The scams are the most stressful part. So many look like real opportunities and companies and turn out to be scams...”

7. Automation & AI

Applicant tracking systems are software programs that scan resumes for keywords and qualifications. While they help recruiters manage high volumes of applications, they are a major source of stress for candidates. Many worry that these automated filters will unfairly discard their application before a human ever sees it.

The rise of AI in hiring has only amplified these concerns, leaving many to feel that their unique skills and experience are being overlooked by algorithms.

Job Seeker Quotes:

  • “Not knowing if a computer or human views the application/not given a chance to interview/being automatically rejected.”
  • “Battling AI programs and getting lost in the numbers of who apply.”

8. The Application Process

Applying for jobs can be a tedious and repetitive chore. Many companies require candidates to manually enter their entire work history into an online form, even after uploading a resume. The time spent tailoring resumes, writing unique cover letters for each role, and navigating clunky application portals adds up, making the process itself burdensome.

Job Seeker Quotes:

  • “The resume section when I’ve already uploaded a resume and now have to input all the resume info separately.”
  • “Building resumes tailored to not be filtered out, proving my skills and repetitive nature of poorly managed systems.”

9. Interviewing

The interview stage is where the pressure truly mounts. For many, performance anxiety is a major hurdle, and some job seekers get nervous, struggle to articulate their thoughts clearly, or worry about being judged. The stress is compounded by unprofessional interviewers, multi-round interview processes that drag on for weeks, and the mental preparation required for each conversation.

Job Seeker Quotes:

  • “The interview process. You are entering an atmosphere where you do not know anyone and what to expect.”
  • “I’m not good at interviews I feel like, this is sometimes hard for a person that is an introvert...”

10. Financial Pressure

Underpinning all other stressors is the financial pressure to secure a job. Whether you were recently laid off, are seeking a higher salary to support your family, or are just starting your career, the need for a steady income is a powerful motivator.

This pressure can make every rejection feel more personal and every day without an offer more stressful, turning the job search into a high-stakes race against time.

Job Seeker Quotes:

  • “Finding a job that offers a livable wage.”
  • “Worry about finances and losing your home.”
