Position Summary

We are seeking a dedicated Estimator to join a high-performing team. In this role you will be responsible for developing accurate and competitive cost estimates for structural steel fabrication and erection projects, supporting the bid process from strategy through submission. You will collaborate closely with project managers, engineers, procurement, and field operations to ensure our proposals align with our business objectives for cost, schedule and constructability.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and analyze bid solicitation documents including drawings, specifications, contract conditions, schedules and general conditions to determine scope and requirements.
  • Perform comprehensive quantity take-offs for structural steel, connections, miscellaneous metals, stairs/railings and associated components.
  • Develop and manage estimates including material cost, labor cost, equipment/rental, subcontractor scopes, shop vs field fabrication, erection costs, overhead and mark-up.
  • Source and solicit vendor/subcontractor pricing, maintain supplier directory and build trusted relationships.
  • Collaborate with operations, fabrication and erection teams to validate assumptions, assess constructability challenges, schedule impacts and value engineering opportunities.
  • Prepare competitive bid packages and ensure timely submission, clearly presenting assumptions, exclusions and contingencies.
  • Track and report on estimating metrics: bid hitrate, cost variance, lessons learned; update historical cost database to support continuous improvement.
  • Support risk assessment and contingency planning to identify potential budget or schedule exposures.
  • Mentor and support junior estimators (if applicable), helping develop their skills and ensuring consistency across estimates.
  • Stay current with structural steel industry trends, fabrication/erection methods, material market fluctuations and relevant estimating software tools.

 

Qualifications & Skills

Required:

  • Minimum 3 years of estimating experience in structural steel fabrication/erection or heavy structural metals environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret structural drawings, shop drawings, specifications and contract documents.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel especially), PDF tools (BlueBeam or equivalent) and estimating software.
  • Excellent analytical, mathematical and organizational skills; high attention to detail.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to partner across multiple functional teams and levels.
  • Self-starter, motivated, able to manage multiple bids/projects concurrently and meet deadlines.

Preferred:

  • 5+ years of estimating experience.
  • Experience with 3D modelling or steel fabrication software (e.g., Tekla, SDS/2, Revit) and estimating platforms (Tekla EPM, Fabtrol).
  • Fabrication and field erection experience with structural and miscellaneous metals.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil/Structural Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).
