Medical Director
Part Time: 48 Hours/Month
Hourly Rate: $150.00
This position description is intended to convey information essential to understanding the scope of the position; it is not intended to be an exhaustive list of skills, efforts, duties, responsibilities, or working conditions associated with the position.
- Serve as the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) Registrant for the District’s Controlled Substances program authorizing the use of Schedule 2 or 3 medications by the District and the CDC National Strategic Stockpile CHEMPACK.
- Serve as the Clinical Director for the District’s Continuing Education Provider program in accordance with Sacramento County EMS Agency requirements. Duties include monitoring all clinical and field activities approved for CE credit, approving instructors, and ensuring quality of prehospital content.
- Build and maintain positive working relationships with District members, allied agencies, and the public.
- Collaborate with other District personnel on matters pertaining to medical and quality of patient care.
- Participate in quality assurance investigations and conduct root cause analyses related to medical events, including appropriate follow-up regarding outcomes.
- Provide medical oversight and expertise to the District’s Continuous Quality Improvement Program (CQI) by reviewing and analyzing EMS effectiveness, system trends, and needs.
- Develop and conduct EMS training based on new technology, patient care protocols, regulatory changes, and/or CQI findings.
- Attend and contribute educational content to monthly Peer Review meetings and quarterly Sacramento County Emergency Medical Services Agency Operational/Medical Advisory Committee meetings.
- Act as a liaison between the District and other physicians, including the Sacramento County EMS Agency (SCEMSA) Medical Director, Fire Service Medical Directors, hospitals, emergency departments, physicians, prehospital providers/agencies, and nurses.
- Interact with regional, state, and local EMS authorities to ensure that standards, records, needs, and requirements are met and resource utilization is optimized.
- Assist the Designated Infection Control Officer (DICO) on incidents of exposure or possible exposure as needed.
- Prepare comprehensive reports and maintain accurate records.
- Other related duties as assigned.
The following duties and responsibilities apply specifically to the Mobile Integrated Health (MIH) program:
- Serve on behalf of Metro Fire as an advisor and advocate to the Sacramento County EMS Agency Medical Director on all aspects of MIH.
- Provide medical expertise, program development, and assistance in designing and obtaining research grants related to MIH.
- Serve as a consultant to the Metro Fire Chief or designee for ongoing evaluation and management of MIH operations.
- Provide continuous quality improvement services specific to MIH.
- Serve as Physician Supervisor to advanced providers (Physician Assistants/Nurse Practitioners) for MIH and provide practice agreements as needed.
- Represent Metro Fire at local, regional, state, and national meetings as requested.
- Provide administrative medical direction and supervision for Metro Fire–sponsored immunization clinics, in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and Sacramento County EMS Agency policies and procedures.
Required:
- Possession of a current, active, and valid license to practice medicine issued by the Medical Board of California.
- Current certification as a diplomate by the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM).
- A valid American Heart Association Health Care Provider CPR Card.
- A valid National Provider Identification Number (NPI).
- Five (5) years of experience, or its equivalent, in the practice of medicine, including trauma care, disaster medical services, and emergency medical research.
Desirable:
- Completion of a Fellowship in Emergency Medicine.
- Subspecialty board certification in Emergency Medical Services (EMS).
- Experience working as a base station physician in Sacramento County.
- Experience with Mobile Integrated Health (MIH).
- Experience supervising advanced providers (Physician Assistants/Nurse Practitioners).
